Review: Bosch Benchtop Router Table RA1181

Bosch Benchtop
Contents

A router table should be supportive in several different ways. For starters, it needs to be compatible with most routers. That’s what you’ll find with the Bosch benchtop router table. This model features two adjustable featherboards, a dust collection port, and a 6-foot power cord in addition to its compatibility.

The aluminum top is 27×18 inches, so it’s big enough to work on, but may not support some of the larger projects. The strength of the aluminum fence and mounting plate exceeds expectations, while the MDF face plates work to get the job done. You will also receive mounting hardware that will allow you to use a variety of different routers on this table, which has been pre-drilled to accept the different equipment options.

Bosch lists a maximum fence opening and throat opening of 3-5/8 inches, so bits up to that diameter will clear. It does not accept template guides.

What We Liked About the Bosch Benchtop Router Table

What we really liked about this particular router table was its ability to handle tall stock. You can adjust the MDF face plates to meet the needs of your working piece, so tall stock gets good support. The result is a smooth operation.

We also found the featherboards to be rather easy to use. Their adjustability allows you to fit a number of different working pieces on this table without much of a problem. They hold stock against the fence and table as you feed it, which keeps results consistent and your hands farther from the bit.

All of the essentials that you need from this table come with it. There’s even a 15-amp dual outlet switch with overload protection and a lockout key. You receive the starter pin and guard for routing curved workpieces. Feed stock against the bit's rotation, right to left as you face the fence, so the cutter doesn't pull the piece away from you. It also features a dust collection port that fits a standard 2.5-inch hose so you can use one of the best shop vacs to keep your working space clean.

What Could Be Improved with the Bosch Benchtop Router Table

Check the top with a straightedge before use. Some owners report a slight high spot, which you can work around once you find it.

We also had a problem with the router removal process. The user is forced to take off the fence and multiple screws with their locking nuts in order to remove the router. This process makes it really difficult to swap out router bits for different cuts.

If you mostly make repeat cuts with one bit, the Bosch benchtop router table is a good fit. If you need to make multiple passes with different bits, however, you may find the processes that this table requires to be somewhat bothersome.
