Review: SKIL Circular Saw with Laser Guide

Contents
Want a full-size circular saw that won't wear out your arm? The SKIL circular saw with laser guide (model 5280-01) is a 7-1/4-inch corded saw that adds a laser line and a dust blower to the basics.
SKIL lists the tool weight at 8.7 pounds, a tad less than the Dewalt lightweight saw.
Here is what you get, per SKIL's 5280-01 product page:
- A 15-amp, 2.5-horsepower motor that runs up to 5,300 RPM.
- A single-beam laser to help you follow your cut line.
- A 51-degree bevel with a positive stop at 45 degrees. Maximum cut depth is 2-7/16 inches at 90 degrees and 1-15/16 inches at 45 degrees.
- An integrated dust blower that keeps sawdust off the cut line.
- A spindle lock and on-board wrench storage for blade changes.
It takes standard 7-1/4-inch blades and ships with a 24-tooth carbide blade and a carrying bag.
What to Expect with the SKIL Circular Saw
There is no lock-on switch. You hold a standard trigger, which has a safety lock to prevent accidental starts.
The foot plate is stamped steel and is fairly thin, so avoid dropping the saw or using the plate as a pry bar.
You will need to take into account the curf of the saw when cutting, especially if you use the laser as your only reference. The laser marks a line, not the full blade width, so check its alignment against a test cut and keep the blade on the waste side of your mark.
The motor is strong enough for framing lumber and sheet goods, while the controls stay simple for a hobbyist or DIY homeowner. If portability is a concern then try a small cordless circular saw.
What Could Be Improved with the SKIL Circular Saw?
SKIL does not list an electric brake for this saw, so the blade keeps spinning for a few seconds after you release the trigger. Wait for it to stop completely before you lift the saw out of the cut or set it down.
A cast aluminum or magnesium foot would be stiffer. The steel foot helps keep the price down, so there's a little give and take here.
Verdict
The SKIL circular saw with laser guide gets the basics right: a 15-amp motor, a 51-degree bevel, a laser line and a built-in dust blower. For these reasons, it earns our recommendation and makes it to our list of top circular saws.
