Review: SKIL 10-Inch Drill Press
A good drill press should be all about precision. You should be able to repeat each hole with consistent depth and quality.
The SKIL 10-inch drill press (model 3320-01) has a 3.2-amp motor and 5 speeds, ranging from 570 RPM to 3,050 RPM. An adjustable depth stop helps with repetitive drilling.
The table tilts up to 45 degrees and locks in place. Along with the laser guide for hole alignment, that makes this drill press easy to set up and use.
But does this make it one of the best drill presses for your needs? Here are our observations that you'll want to take a close look at.
- It has a 1/2-inch keyed chuck, so it accepts the larger bits some woodworking jobs need. Always remove the chuck key before you start the motor.
- The table's up-and-down range is limited. Longer bits for deeper holes can be hard to fit on this benchtop press.
- Bolt the base to your bench. A light benchtop drill press can shift under hard feed pressure, and that moves your workpiece.
- Check that the depth stop nut is tight before a run of holes, and test the depth on scrap first.
- The laser runs on AA batteries (two come in the box). Switch the laser off when you're done so the batteries last.
Is the SKIL 10-Inch Drill Press Underpowered?
At 3.2 amps, this drill press isn't meant for heavy duty work. It's more for a hobbyist or a light duty woodworker at best. If you're making birdhouses, this drill press will do a good job.
If you're producing a lot of parts in hardwood, consider stepping up to a larger, more powerful drill press.
The belt and pulleys need an occasional check. Unplug the machine before you open the belt cover to change speeds or tighten the belt.
It is built mainly for wood. If you drill metal, use the lowest speed, cutting fluid and a sharp bit, and clamp the work.
OSHA warns that a drill can catch loose stock and spin it, so use a hold-down or clamp rather than your hand. If you work primarily on wood projects, the SKIL 10-inch drill press gives consistent results.
