Review: Shop Vac 1.5-Gallon Wet-Dry Vacuum

Shop Vac 1.5-Gallon Wet-Dry Vacuum
Contents

Why buy an oversized shop vacuum when you have a small space to clean? A compact model can still come with the attachments you need.

The Shop Vac 1.5-gallon wet/dry vacuum is rated at 2 peak HP and offers a lot of versatility for an affordable price.

Unlike larger Shop Vac models, it has no dolly or wheels. It sits flat on the ground and uses a 1-1/4-inch diameter hose about 4 feet long. It also comes with a crevice tool and a gulper nozzle.

What we really appreciated with this vacuum, however, is the fact that it can be mounted on your wall. If you mostly need a shop vacuum for quick cleanups at a power sander, table saw, or other power tool, this keeps it close at hand.

How Does This Shop Vac Work as an Actual Vacuum?

The small tank limits it as a primary vacuum. It does a good job in a small shop or for portable jobs, like vacuuming the floor mats in a vehicle.

Cleaning a whole garage with it would take a long time, because of the short reach and the small tank.

The exhaust is strong. Point it away from dusty surfaces when you start, or you'll blow sawdust around the shop.

Fine wood dust can irritate your lungs. OSHA links wood dust to respiratory problems, so wear a dust mask when cleaning up after sanding.

What Could Be Improved with the Shop Vac 1.5 Gallon Model?

This Shop Vac can become top heavy when it is full of liquid, so empty it often during wet cleanups. A float shuts off suction when the tank fills, which limits how much liquid it picks up at one time.

For wet pickup, remove any paper filter bag first, and follow the manual's filter instructions.

The cord is short, at about 6 feet, and the hose is about 4 feet. You don't get a lot of reach, but the unit is light and easy to carry.

Shop-Vac's spec sheets define peak HP as a laboratory motor rating, not running power. Compare airflow (CFM) and sealed pressure if you want a better sense of real suction.

For an affordable Shop Vac, this model does have a lot of strength. If you want a compact vacuum with few features, or one to pair with your tools, we think you'll enjoy using it. That's how it earns our recommendation today.
