Review: Makita 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit

Some power sanders offer variable speed, but the speeds aren't very different. A useful speed dial should give you a meaningful low and high OPM setting.
The Makita 5-inch random orbit sander kit delivers that. Makita rates the BO5041K at 3 amps with a 4,000 to 12,000 OPM speed dial.
Here are our other observations about this sander.
#1. There is a rubberized grip for a secure hold. Makita uses a rubberized palm grip and handle for comfort. You can palm the top for downward pressure or grip the body for control.
#2. A two-handed grip is supported with this design. The adjustable front handle gives you a second hand on the tool. You can reposition it for sanding in corners and tight areas.
#3. You can have continuous or intermittent use. The large two-finger trigger has a lock-on button for continuous sanding. A pad control system limits pad speed at start-up to reduce gouging.
#4. It has a large orbit action. Makita has equipped this 5-inch sander with a 1/8-inch random orbit action. Makita says the larger orbit sands faster while leaving a swirl-free finish.
#5. It's lightweight. Makita lists the net weight at 3.5 pounds. That is light enough for long sessions, and it is one of the affordable random orbit sanders we'd recommend for frequent use.
#6. You can connect a vacuum. The kit includes a cloth dust bag and a dust bag nozzle, and the sander collects through the pad. Its built-in vacuum port adapter lets you connect a shop vacuum for better dust control.
Wood dust can cause respiratory problems, and OSHA notes that sanders produce the most dust of common woodworking tools. Use the vacuum connection when you can and wear a dust mask.
The kit comes with a tool case. Use 5-inch, 8-hole hook-and-loop discs.
The Makita random orbit power sander does an excellent job of creating a consistent finish. Its speed range and grip options earn our recommendation.
