Review: Black and Decker Lithium-Ion Circular Saw

Sometimes you don’t need a massive power tool to get your woodworking chores finished. A portable tool with the right amount of power can often be just as useful as the best heavy-duty circular saws. This is how we viewed the Black and Decker Lithium-Ion circular saw.
As a 20V MAX tool with a 3,700 RPM top speed, it isn’t going to outperform a corded model. On the other hand, you can take it almost anywhere.
There are some key points that you’ll want to look at before deciding on this saw.
- This circular saw uses a 5-1/2-inch blade instead of the common 7-1/4-inch size. Replacement blades are sold, but there are fewer choices than for 7-1/4-inch saws.
- Depth adjustments and blade changes are tool-free.
- Bevel detents sit at 45 and 90 degrees, and a pivoting shoe adds control. The bare tool weighs 6 pounds.
- It uses Black and Decker’s 20V MAX lithium-ion battery. The BDCCS20B is the bare tool, so the battery and charger are sold separately.
Run time depends on the battery size and how hard you push the saw. Power tapers as the battery drains, so a second battery helps if you plan a full day of cutting.
What Could Be Improved with the Black and Decker Lithium-Ion Circular Saw?
The small motor can bog down or bind in thicker stock, especially near its maximum depth. Feed slowly, support both sides of the cut, and let the blade reach full speed before entering the wood.
If the blade binds, release the trigger and let it stop before backing out. Forcing a binding blade is how kickback starts, and OSHA requires a retractable lower guard over the teeth on portable circular saws, so keep it working freely.
The Black and Decker lithium-ion circular saw is a handy tool for general household needs, some woodworking projects, and perhaps some light construction work. It won’t replace a full-powered saw such as this Porter Cable model, but it’s lightweight and it gets the job done.
