A good pair of sawhorses gives you a stable, safe place to cut, assemble and finish. They are far steadier than concrete blocks or buckets, which can tip or shift mid-cut.

Our Favorite Saw Horses

Modern sawhorses are made from steel, aluminum or tough plastic, and many fold flat. They are lighter and easier to store than traditional wooden horses.

Our Recommendations for the Best Saw Horses

Best Saw Horses Reviews

1. WORX

This clamping sawhorse pair comes with bar clamps that lock work to the top, plus a built-in shelf and cord hooks. The plastic horses are light, yet Worx rates the pair for 1,000 pounds (500 pounds per horse).

They stand about 32 inches tall when open and fold to about 2.5 inches deep, so they store easily and travel well.

2. 2×4 Basics

These brackets turn 2x4s you supply into sturdy sawhorses. Because you cut the lumber, you choose the height and length, so you can build horses that fit you and your projects.

The kit includes the brackets and hardware. Use straight, sound lumber, and check the maker's load rating for your configuration.

3. Stanley

This adjustable twin pack has easy-to-reach height latches and built-in trays for tools. Lower shelves let you run a plank between the two horses for extra storage.

They are durable and affordable. Check the stated load rating on the package for the pair.

4. Toughbuilt

This folding sawhorse is one of the strongest in this group, with a high load rating for a single horse. It has pivoting feet for uneven ground and powder-coated, zinc-plated metal for durability.

Support arms hold 2x4s, so a pair plus lumber or plywood makes a quick jobsite table. It costs more than plastic horses but is built for heavy use.

5. Target Precision

This is a basic, versatile folding sawhorse. You supply the lumber for the top beam.

The legs are steel tubing that locks into place, and each leg has a non-slip, non-scratch rubber tip so the horse stays put on finished floors.

How to Find the Best Saw Horses

woods scattered on the floor

You’ll find that the modern sawhorse can be configured in three standard ways. Some are complete models that you just unfold when you need to use them, then fold up again to store them. Others come with manufactured legs that require you to install a crossbeam. There are also saw horses that are just brackets – you need to supply the legs and the crossbeam. If you have a miter saw, you set up your sawhorses with a miter saw stand or wood chop saw.

Whichever type you choose, check these three points:

  • Load rating. Make sure the rating covers your heaviest work, such as a full sheet of plywood plus a saw and your weight leaning on it.
  • Portability. Folding horses that fit in a car trunk and weigh little are easiest to bring to a job site.
  • Height. Fixed horses vary, and the right height depends on your height and the task. Adjustable legs let you set a comfortable height for cutting or assembly.

For most people we suggest the Toughbuilt model for its high weight capacity and folding design.

Cutting Sheet Goods on Sawhorses

When you cut plywood on sawhorses, support both sides of the cut. If the sheet sags, the kerf closes and pinches the blade, which can cause kickback.

Bob Vila suggests setting the horses about six feet apart and laying two 2x4s across them so the sheet does not sag. Set the circular saw blade so the teeth reach about 1/4 inch below the plywood.

Another method from Popular Woodworking is to lay a sheet of 2-inch rigid foam across the horses as a sacrificial platform, which supports both pieces through the whole cut.

What Will it Cost Me to Buy the Best Saw Horses?

Bracket kits and basic plastic folding horses are the least expensive. Heavy-duty metal folding horses with high load ratings cost the most. Prices change, so compare current listings.

Saw horses can also be built from 2x4s if you would rather save money.
